Why do horses crib2007-11-24 21:23:18

The horses do it because of being bored or etc... like i mentioned above. It appeals to them because it creates a momentary 'high' feeling for the horses.

if you dont want to use a miracle collar, a nice mixture of tabasco sauce and dish soap works good too(no water added). Take the mixutre and rub it into the wood where your horse is cribbing and the smell and taste totally turns them off. My tb isnt a cribber, he's a wood chewer and it works for him. We have another tb whos a cribber and it works just as well for him.

Most evey one on here has told you how it affects your horse, so I wont repeat that. I once owned a cribber and here is some thing to consider. You said that yours is in a pasture right. Depending on how bad he cribbs he could be tearing down the fences. My horse had one post that he liked the best. I came in one day and he and all the other horses were gone. After pulling on this post day after day it finally just fell. After hunting horses for 4 1/2 hrs we finally found out how they got out. That could have been really bad if they had gone to the road. Another problem is other horse ppl may shunn you and your horse for fear theirs might learn it from him. I cant say that its catching or not, I have never seen any proof of that. Although I have heard that it was all my life. Boarding stables dont like to take cribbers most of the time.

I would try the collor first but get one that is leather so that it will break if it getts caught on some thing. I have used the muzzle too. and it does work on most, but you will need to clean and once in a while replace the padding around the nose. That is easly done with the string off of you feed sacks and some cheap cloth ( Fake sheep skin). Just grab a needle and whip stich it on.
