Why do my geldings

Why do my geldings2007-11-24 21:23:18

walk around with thier sheath hanging out?

I don't know if there is a reason but I have had geldings my whole life (except for a mean ol shetland mare!) and once in awhile they just let it all hang out while they are grazing or just standing around. My Arabian does it all the time and I noticed my TB doing it a couple of times. It's clean and healthy just curious if all your geldings do this too? Silly boys. =)

Answers:

they are just chilling out. at least your geldings don't do it while you groom and tack them up like mine does... he also really enjoys his sheath being cleaned even when it is already clean, don't know (imagine how embarrassing that is when your significant other is around) also, they will do it after a workout or if they have to pee.

it feels good, they do it when relaxed
My TB did this every once and awhile, and I agree I think it's part of his being relaxed cause he always had one rear hoof bent and his head was drooped and sleepy-eyed. Unfortuntately, you have to periodically clean the sheath to remove "smegma" that builds up around the sheath. It's kinda tricky to get him to drop when you want him to, but once it has, gently cleanse the smegma off with a soft cloth and light suds of ivory soap and warm water. I know it seems "oogy" but it helps to keep him clean and healthy.
Yeah they do it when they are relaxed- most geldings do this- some more than others. They can do it when they are lazy, or sometimes when they are excited- (most do not know they are geldings... :)
they're just relaxed. my TB gelding lets it drop after a long workout when he gets his grain. :)
Just like any man.basically lazy. I've have seen them "relax" in the show ring. They are just animals and don't see any reason "why not."
Is it hot when they do it? My boys do that whenever the weather is too hot, and my vet said that it just gets really hot up there, so they just let it "hang out." Imagine how fun that behavior is around 8 year old girls. My students always have "interesting questions." hehehe
Mine do the same thing when they are relaxed. They also do it occasionally when they are groomed (which makes cleaning easier). I'm sure that if mares could do something similar they would to.
Your boys are comfortable. They are relaxed and so they let it hang.
Haha I know my gelding does that all the time! It basically means that they are relaxed and 'letting loose.' :P at least he's not a nervous wreck!
If you had to "hold it in" all day long, letting it hang would feel good, right? My palomino gelding used to that all the time! We also have a stallion (un-breedable b/c he is an OTTB, and his previous owners shot him with so many steroids) that does something kind of humorous. He doesn't do this to anyone else. When my barn manager goes near him, he sticks it out, and she doesn't know whether to feel insulted or special! Horse humor!
