Why do my horses eat there poop Am I doing something wrong with there care2007-11-24 21:23:19

Honestly I have no clue, not sure if its a boredom thing, or a nutrition thing.

They are healthy wellfed horses and i'm sure yours are too.

Do you have a lick mineral tub and a salt tub out?

I know my mules paddocks look like the kindegarden pen, they have allll kinds of toys to destroy in there. I would maybe just add a jolly ball, an old hose *thats their favorite*, dog toys from walmart, tubes from wrapping paper etc to keep their boredom level down while in the paddock.

I take my dog in petco, she gets one toy, the mules get an armload out.

You can call your vet and ask, but its definatley not worth hauling them in or anything right now.

Horses do do this but more common in babies and more exceptable for them to do it cause they are putting bacteria in there gut which they need. When a full grown horse do this it basicaly means they are lacking something in there diet. Are you feeding a good quality feed and good quality hay? You say you lock them in a paddock? are you giving them hay? My paint gelding started doing this a couple months ago so I completely changed his diet to better meet his needs and he has stopped. You just need to do some trial and error and find out what you are not giving him and start giving it to him.

Dont worry about it. Its not a big deal. All horses do it. I dont know exactly why they do it, but they do. Its nothing to be calling the vet out over, just for her (or him) to tell you that all horses do it and its nothing to be concerned about.

Any time I have seen this in mature horses, it was do to a mineral deficiency. Like hhqh said- if they are chewing on fences and trees, this is also a sign of the same thing.
