Why do people put blindfolds on a horse2007-11-24 21:23:20

i was driving home today, and i saw this horse with a blindfold on... What is the purpose of it?

Answers:

its called a fly mask and its made out of mesh so they can see through it and the purpose is to keep they flies out of its eyes. its better for the horse in the long run.

It keeps the horse calm, it helps in training, and it helps keep bugs out of they eye.
They are used to keep flies off of their eyes.
It's not a blindfold. It's a fly mask to protect the horse's face. They can see through it like you can see through a pair of dark sunglasses.
I'm assuming that the horse was in the pasture? It's a fly mask to prevent flies getting to the soft mucous membranes around the eyes.
It helps to calm them down if they can't see what is going on. This is also done when working with wildlife also.
it can be used for different things.maybe that horse has an eye infection and the owners don't want it to get infected so that would be a reason. this one time at the ranch I ride at this horse keeps rolling under the fence. so they put an eye mask on him.
well if the horse was in a pasture it was probably a fly mask they put these on horses to protect there eyes from flys they aren't really blind folds the horses can see out of them they are like mesh. or sometimes people will put a blind fold on a horse so that it will stay calm.
To relax them ,not freaking them out ,calming them down. I would think..Never had a horse though....
I think it is used to keep the flies/flying bugs off and to block of the sun rays (horsie sunglasses?).
some horses get spooked easy, or are not quite trained yet. This keeps there attention where it should be, with the rider.
It was probably a fly mask, many horses wear them to keep the flies from getting on their faces and in their eyes. Fly masks are actually made out of see through mesh, if you ever have the chance to handle one put it over your own eyes and you will be able to see right through it.
Sometime, they are put on there after a recent surgery, so flies do not get on it. Some blindfolds are not see trough, and these are used to keep a horse calm, so they do not see what is happening around them, but they are mainly used for fly protection.
Blindfolds will calm a horse so it will willingly follow the tug of a leadrope because it cannot see where it is going. used often to get a horse into a horse trailer, out of a barn fire, or when they are put in a sling to board a ship. Also if they are dipped in water and the blindfold is cold, it will help in hot weather. if the horse was in the pasture, it was probably a fly mask, which is a very fine mesh that the horse can see out of and it keeps fly's out of his eyes and sometimes ears. but if it was an actual blindfold on the horse in the field then the horse is probably very spooky about everything and runs himself into a dangerous sweat until he is put away. my grandma had a horse that way and they found if they tied a blindfold around the horses eyes to where he could only see out the bottom of it when he was grazing, he wouldn't see as much and therefore wouldn't hurt himself, but he could still see to walk around, graze and drink, but not enough to run around.
If it was blinders they use them to help the horse focus ahead and that way they can not see what is going on beside them, usally you will see them on amish buggy horses
