Why do people put blindfolds on a horse2007-11-24 21:23:20

Flymasks are the mesh masks that goes around the eyes and they are made out of see-thru mesh(looked through my mare's to make sure no mesh was sticking out and just out of curiosity) they are used to keep flies out and away from eyes(the purpose of my mare wearing one) and sometimes with horses that have eye problems so the eyes don't get irraitated and keeps dust,and some of the uv rays from making the eye injury worse)

This mask stuff is not true at all, they are blindfolds for the sides of the eyes that keeps the horse focused straight ahead, if he cant see whats going on beside him he wont get distracted, this is especailly true in carriage situation if there is one or more horses.

Nobody on here ever watch an old western?

to keep it come when you are doing something like Giving it a needle or taking the baby from as Mare it pretects you and the horses drom geting hurt

What you saw was probably a fly mask. Fly masks are made out of fine mesh, and the horse can easily see through them. Their purpose is to keep flies and other insects from getting into the horse's eyes and possibly causing an injury or infection. Some fly masks also have covers for the horse's ears as well, and these serve the same purpose for them. A horse which is working in harness will frequently wear a bridle that has side pieces called blinkers. Blinkers are designed to prevent the horse from seeing to the side or behind., and only straight in front. Race horses also wear blinkers for the same reason- only in their case, the blinkers look a lot like a fly mask with holes cut into it for the horse to see out of. Hope this helps.

it helps with training,to keep flies from there eyes and to keep them calm so they won't get excited if something happens

if it was out in the pasture then it most likely was a fly mask- used to keep flies off of their face. if it had a blindfold covering its eyes while being led, then it was used to keep the horse calm to trust the person leading it.

i am almost posative it isn't a blind fold! if i know what you saw it was a fly mask!! lol it keeps the flys off there eyes and they can c fine through them
