Why do people think stallions are so unpredictable2007-11-24 21:23:21

Many stallions are bored, lonely, and depressed. That is why self mutiliation is much higher in stallions than others. As a stallion he is going to be corrected for doing things that just come natural to him - stallions like to use their mouths and are much more nippy. They are more energetic. They tend to be more herd bound as they are driven by hormones to be with a group. We correct them for these things, and we need to to keep safe, but it isn't always an easy life.

As a gelding he could live in a group enviroment. He could run with other horses, he could be more trustworthy rode with others, you wouldn't have to worry about him escaping out of his pen and accidently breeding or fighting with other horses, he would be safer for kids and visitors to pet and handle, and you wouldn't have to be as careful around him.

Don't get me wrong. There are many terrific stallion around and they certainly don't all live bad lives, and there are many excellent stallion handlers. I just think that if you don't plan to get the one benefit of owning a stallion - and that is raising foals - then why would you take all the disadvantages they bring?!

the reason people think that studs are so unpredictable is because some people with studs dont train them well enough. People with mares are just wary about having studs around because when a mare is in heat the stud (if it isnt trained well enough) turns very unruly and hard to control.
