Why do show ponies not wear numnahs
in loads of magazines that ive seen show ponies never wear saddlepads or numnahs, just the saddle. why not and doesnt it hurt their back if they dont wear one?
Answers:I feel like this is a european thing; I live in the united states and I *never* see anyone ride without a saddle pad. People use a fleece fitted pad, a square quilted pad, a wither pad, or a combo. When showing hunters, we show in a white fleece fitted pad. Square pads aren't used in hunter classes but often are in jumpers where the dress code is more casual, and square pads are the norm in dressage. That's the American answer, in my experience.
a nummnah/saddlepad is ONLY there for keeping the saddle clean and looking nice. if you have a well fitting saddle one is not needed but most people choose to use them to stop their saddle getting all mucky and sweaty underneith! in shows, people believe the numnah deflects the eye from the improtant bits so they usually go without, especially in hunter classes. if they do use one it is usually plain brown, black or white for dressage

Tthey are using smaller pads that cover the gullet and panels, but doesn't come down the sides. These are often made of rubber, gel, or form and protects the horse back, but are hardly visible.
They may not be using a pad at all if they are taking pics to sell horse or his sperm. Often the horse is just tacked for the picture, not to be ridden hard. they want you looking at the horse not the numnahs.
