Why do some horses go barefoot and do not need shoes
Why do some horses go barefoot and do not need shoes2007-11-24 21:23:22
I would like to see the barefoot movement continue and see more horses who are allowed to grow up and start being ridden without AUTOMATICALLY putting shoes on them. I don't believe that every horse can comfortably go barefoot, because we have been breeding out the need for hard feet after so many generations of shoeing. But why put them on right away? Why not WAIT to see if a horse will truly need them before nailing away?
I think if shoeing was considered a last resort instead of just a routine thing, you'd see MANY more horses without shoes.
horses that do a lot of walking on gravel and pavement should have shoes but horses that only work in dirt arena's don't need shoes to protect their feet from the hard gavel and pavement
Some times it is becouse the farm or paddock does not have stones.

Horses that are not ridden in rough terrain or on rock or hard surfaces generally do not need to wear shoes. Many types of show events also require horses to be shod, and sometimes horses wear shoes only on the front feet. It all depends on what kind of terrain the horse is running on, as well as how much pressure will be on the horse's feet depending on speed, etc. A horse that is seldom ridden or that lives in an area with sandy or soft soil may never ever need shoes.
Horses with shoes are generally racehorses or horses that commonly pull wagons or plows, or any other heavy running or pulling. A horse without shoes is generally just a normal horse. horseshoes stop the horses hooves from getting something jammed in them or splitting, sort of like how we wear shoes in order not to get blisters and step on rocks.
There are a lot of reasons.
