Why do some western people leave their horses tacked up in the trailer2007-11-24 21:23:22

I do Rodeo and I even see allot of the Ropers do the same thing. The Ropers to me are just lazy since they usually have a ton of time to get their horse ready for their runs, but they go and talk with friends or spin their ropes off of dummy calves. Also, most who do this are not too worried about their horse but about winning. I hate to offend any ropers out there!

To me it is a big no, no. I grew up the same way and don't condone it, but it is a common practice where Ranches are common.

Another thing is when your up at 3 or 4 different rodeos in a day, it is easier to have your horse tacked up all day. Allot of Ropers do this and so do allot of Barrel Racers.

Hope that answers your question, and I agree that it is comical, but it a long time common practice among ranch hands and cowboys.

I read that this was acceptable in a training book once...it mainly focused on western training. I probably wouldn't do it unless the stirrups were of the saddle, or tied in some way.
Classyone said it all and some! I too up here in the north have seen this too. However those that did ( not those that do)when I was younger tied the stirrups with a quick knot over the seat of the saddle. I never do leave a saddle on a horse, but, many do. I agree with all the rodeo running and leaving them on for the riders bene. But>>> as a competitor>>> ( I'm looking for a big ouch here) There is NO NEED to run 2, 3, 4 plus times a day or show up late to an event! On that note, practice at home and run your run. STOP THE Exhibition or over booking yourself, you miss 1/2 of them anyway! Think about the %^&*%horse. Sorry guys, I'll here this later, I know. I love ya! BUT, those that know me (when do you see me in an exhibition or be late when my name is called?) So, unsaddle, let your horse relax and wait until tomorrow unless you have a real job at hand!
I think you are being steriotypical-- even as an english and western rider i must say that not all western riders do that... It's possible that you live out in a kind of hillybillyish place and that most of the people don't really even care about being safe with their horses etc...so thats why you are seeing them being dangeous like that-- and In texas I know that most riders are western so you are probably just seeing hickish western riders... But not all western riders are like that at all so don't think that they aren't as sophistaced as us english riders because they really are! And i agree that it is very dangerous-- especially the nose sticking out thing... Unfortunately I knew a lady that left her trailer window open and the horse stuck his head out on the high way-- this is GRAPHIC-- but the horses head got hit by a truck and he was literally decapitated. =\
English and western people do it. I think it's just preference. Although, my guess is because they don't want to lug that big 'ol heavy saddle from out of their truck or tackroom onto their horse's backs more than once. ;)
I do that with my horses as well, but every trailer is different, ours, at the front of the trailer has its own little closet if u will, and theres like a cage door where u can keep ur sadles and tack, where it wont move around and where it wont cause injury to the horse, its safely put away but it really all depends on the owner and the trailer they use...
You know I never thought of that before. my only assumption is that they are traveling to an event or something such as that. I agree with you, it's not safe and I ride western. It also bugs me when I see a ratted out old trailer because working in a vet hospital has exposed me to many horrific accidents with horses falling thru trailers or flipping over like you said and they never end well. but to answer you question... i really don't know. maybe they're showing off their big fancy saddle!
well, i actually do that, i dont think someone would do that if their horse wasnt used 2 riding in trailers but it works, its a very very rare thing 2 c a horse do what u were talking about
It is an extremely bad idea... I found that out by experience. We used to tack up our horses before we trailered them to the park where we went trail riding, never thought about it being a problem until one day my best friend's mare got her halter stuck on our trainer's horse's saddle. She freaked out, fortunately we weren't driving at the time and she did manage to get free, but it could have turned out a lot worse.
