Why do some western people leave their horses tacked up in the trailer2007-11-24 21:23:22

I guess they have different standards.

They either do not know any better, they are lazy, or they are idiots. I have ridden Western for years and have never loaded my horse tacked up.

some english riders do that too - mainly I think it's to save time when they arrive at their destination, some people drive out to bridleways etc, ride and then drive back. It's probably not a good idea now that I'm thinking about it.

I use stock trailers, but like you I ride english and was taught that a tacked horse is a big no-no. I put it down to another one of the idiots that think horses are like atvs. They just don't care that the horse could get hurt, or they just don't know better.

While it might not be the safest thing, it is so convenient. Have you ever tacked up Western? The saddles are so heavy it is rediculas. Some of us Westerners are still using the T knot to connect the girth (cinch) to the saddle instead of buckles. It allows the horse to adjust to the saddle if you don't have a whole lot of time before we race/show. Also, if your horse is already tacked up, you can practice a lot more instead of using your practice time to groom and tack your horse. There are so many reasons for it!

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that most of the horses that you see tacked up in the trailer are probably ranch horses that are being hauled from one ranch location to the next. The cowboys used them at one location and now have cows to work at another location, so they load the horses and head down the road. It's a time thing. I see this all the time in South Arkansas where I live..
