Why do some western people leave their horses tacked up in the trailer2007-11-24 21:23:22

Yes, it is unsafe to haul horses tacked up - especially if being hauled beside another horse. But this is NOT a "western" or "Texas" issue. it is a safety issue.

If a rider makes sure the stirrups are tied up and other horses can't reach the tack and get tangled, and there is a good reason for hauling tacked up, I don't see where it is anyone else's business except the horse owner's.

Ok, not to be rude or anything, but I'm seein both of two worlds here. There are the people who are like, well, it's no problem at all, and the people who are like, OH MY GOD THEY BETTER STOP BEFORE SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS!! Did you ever think that the people u see doing this might just be going down the street? Again, not to be rude, but I think y'all are making a big stink about a very minor thing. There needs to be a place where you draw the line and go with ur saddle in the bed of ur truck, but if ur just going a little ways, I don't think it really matters. And all this talk about ranches... maybe its just that I've always lived in New Mexico, but most of the ranches out here are so off road, you would have to be insane to take a truck and horse trailer around the ranch. And they are so far back in the mountains that there isn't really any highway that you can put gates along. So not only does your horse have to stay tacked (god forbid) but they also have to walk all that long way. And I think that as long as your horse is in shape and ready for the trip (for example, one of my horses tears up his legs without leg wraps) this is no problem at all. At least, none of my horses have dropped over dead yet. Not to mention, it would be very difficult, and you would need a VERY flexable horse to get his hoof caught in a stirrup.

So in answer to your question, there's a lot of reasons we "westerners" and "ranchers" ride with our horses tacked up, but english riders (no offense but I think y'all are kind of stuck up in general. Not all of y'all I'm sure, but at least every english rider I've met has been; u know who u r and if u are stuck up) do that too. Sorry if I sound raging, but it is just my oppinion.
