Why do we say is he broke2007-11-24 21:23:23

Why do we use the words "break" or "broke" in reffering to the training or lack of in our horses. Isn't there another word we can use that would collectively make sence to everyone and drop this one?

You would think over the centuries, the relationships between horse and rider would have evolved with a better more "correct" word.

After all, none of us want to "break" our horse- heck, we aren't even "fixing" them-

So! Can anyone think of a new, more oppropriate word to use?

The question should be why is a horse "green"? Yes a horse can be broke of his spirt but why on earth does not having much experience make them green??

I am training my mule, or they are already trained. Thats the language I use.

If you havent noticed, in the horse community, traditions arent quick to change.

You could also use trained, but it wouldn't show how trained he is. Broke is used to show that he can be ridden. Trained would just be well, trained. You would never know how "trained" he is by just saying that. Another word would just not be informatable enough. A green horse is a slightly trained horse, so how would you tell the difference beetween green or very well broke if you used the word trained. It doesn't even matter I guess.

From the old days - when training a horse to ride meant getting on its back and and beating the **** out of it until it submitted and stopped trying to buck the guy off. The horse's spirit was "broken".
