Why does my horse buck When we hack out he walks backwards whn we change direction, and bucks, why2007-11-24 21:23:24

I have a 14.2 12/13 yr old heavy weight cob, of which i have had about 6/7mnths. To begin with he was a overweight plodder, but non the less a bomproof and altough slow willing hacker. With plenty or regular excercise over time he has began to tone up and become a lot fitter, thus improving the quality of our hacks as he can keep up with other horses and just seems to enjoy himself alot more. However for the past month or 6 weeks or so he has done very little hacking out on his own i have gone more or less on every occasion with either one or two horses, now he will hack infront of them and behind fine. I have also been doing a fair amount of schooling to try and get his flat work better, but i have stopped this as i have no confidence in there with him as he has a tendence to buck, (although i was told he has never done this before) it has become an all to common experience and lost my nerve after he bucked at a jump and cantered of. I try to hack out but he walks backwards & bucks

clean the tack, girth, boots everything- little bits of mud and stuff might be rubbinmg

Perhaps the bit is uncomfortable for him or causing pain.

I'd say it is definitely a pain issue - though I'd guess more likely saddle than bit. If the bit hurts he's probably going to be throwing his head around. I'd start looking for sore areas on his back, just press around and he'll let you know where they are! If that turns up nothing it could be pain elsewhere - maybe even in a shoulder or hock.
