Why does my horse run with his head down2007-11-24 21:23:01

Lately when I'm riding in the feild and go into a canter and some times a trot, my horse will lower his head and just kept moving with in head lowered ( it's almost so low he can kick it with his front legs!) . It's quite annoying, awkward to ride and i can't get him to lift it willingly while still moving, (when i pull up he'll just stop). When he runs in the pen with out anyone riding him, his heads up. Why is he doing that and how can i fix it when it happens?

Answers:

it depends on what kind of horse you have. this usually works on saddlebreds and quarter horses. dont pull he'll stop what u need to do is 'bump him up' with the bridle by jerking the bridle one side at a time. if u let him do this this will become a habit because he knows he can get away with it.

Do you have a new bit? You have to bump up his head as soon as he tries to put it down. Don't let him keep going so low he is trying to avoid riding on the bit...
when i rode some westerm trained horses they all lowered thier heads, It seems they are suppose to have a low head set as I' have seen it in photos. Is your horse western trained? When I rode on english horses the only ones that lowered thier heads where really avoiding bit pressure and direction, I would keep him from lowering his head and if he does I would slowly bring his head up. I have found some horse need a little extra kick if they try to stop so he knows you want him to keep moving forward but you want his head up.
After a vet check to make sure there is no medical problem , I ask how old is this horse ? What was it's prior training. Some young horses will , aviod the bit by putting their heads up or down . Sometimes they may be thinking about bucking. What kind of bit are you useing? Use a dee rind or o ring snaffle , bump his head up , using a pull release method , useing your leg in combo bump him around , asking for his face. when he gives it release the preasure , and praise him , repeat...
could be the saddle, could be that you are off balance, could also be a back problem., my gelding sorta does the same thing and ive been investigating it.
If he's young and not trained to go on the bit, then he may be
