Why does my horse snort with every stride in trot and canter
my friends a breeder and their horses all do this after they come back from training. nothings wrong with them they are very healthy and have an excellent reputation. they own shining topsail look him up. somtimes it's just how they are trained. though it could be a sign of something else such as:
having their undurance built up the wrong way,
wind sucking,
a girth or bridle that is too tight,
a bit that is ill-fitting,
a barrel that isn't well sprung,
(having a well sprung barrel means that their ribs are set wide to allow the lungs to expand more)
or a respiratory problem.
some breeds of horse have differences in their build such as arabians. most horses have 18 ribs and arabians have 17 and most horses have 18 tail vertebrae but arabians have 16. do some research on your horses breed and check for any abnormalities.
if none of these prove true then it's just the way the horse is or was trained. nothing to wry about.
maby he is just warming up unless he does it all the time, he he keeps doing it ask advice from you local vet
we have a horse at our barn that does the same thing...we were told that it is either a seasonal thing like a mild summer allergy, or something more serious like heaves.a breathing problem.it can also be more inflammed in summer because of both the humidity and the dry dustblowing in his face whilst riding...hope this helped a little!
Many horses cough or snort the first few seconds when the begin to trot/canter, but I do not think its normal to have a horse do so the entire time you ride. This could be a sign of something mild, or a much more serious condition.
