Why is this horse waving her tail
This mare is waving her tail ferocely on her self, she is mostly hitting her private part. Im asking this question because she is a very calm mare. Vet said it was due to mosquitos, possible, but the other horses are not doing that much. I wonder if any other owner have that kind of problem.
Answers:Mares can tend to get dirty inbetween the teets. I would reach down there and see if that was the case and you can use warm water and soap to clean it out.
Other than that spray her really good with fly spray and she if it continues.
Is it constant or intermittent? Day or night? Things like that are good to notice when you go to talk to the vet if nothing else works.
While the mosquito's feed on me, they leave my son alone and it's the same with horses. Some are more easily irritated and affected by mosquito's biting which explains why the others horses aren't doing it so much. Get some spray and help the poor girl. I know how she feels because I'm covered in bites!
she's probably getting flys and mosquitos away. the other horses might have a different kind of blood that mosquitos aren't attrackted (sp?) to as much as her blood. my gelding gets really pissed if we don't spray him with fly and mosquito spray and his ears go back and he's swishing his tail and stamping his foot. it's really funny to watch 'cause sometimes he tried to bite at them and then when we spray him he looks at us kinda like... "you couldn't have done that earlier?"
I have used skin so soft for the mosquito's it is good, I also have purchased cattle rub stuff comes in a square can and follow the directions closely and make up an inexpensive spray. Avoid the saddle area if your going to ride soon. Cause it will irritate. When I read your letter and you stated that she was really concentrating on her privates It sent a chill thru me. Are your horses boarded at your home or at a community barn. I don't mean to scare you but if your boarding in a multi horse barn your horse may be getting a visitor at night and I don't mean of the horsey type. I have heard some horror stories, one person suspected something and set up a camera and caught a fellow boarder doing unbelievable stuff I won't even repeat. Maybe it should be brought up to your vet to check her a little closer. I am sorry I had to mention this but you should be aware.
flies...my mare does this with her tail when she is agitated...or bothered by flies
there are a few possiblities- i had a gelding who did that and it was because of 2 things
problem:
he got himself dirty there everyday from using the bathroom
then the flys would come and get on it
normally flyspray would stop them from coming but the grime he go on himself there covered it up
so the flys came
so he would swat to get rid of the flys
answer:
about once a day take a sponge and sponge the area with clean room temperture water
after cleaning squirt flyspray onto a towel and wipe around the area
try this for a few days and see if she stops
if she doesn't you might want to contact a vet
