Will horses eat leek beetroot or turnips2007-11-24 21:23:09

i wanted to know because off a survey and i dont want to know if they can i want to know if they will and like it or if it is good for then thanks

Answers:

some horses will eat these while other horses wont just like people like some foods and not others. I don't know how good leeks are for horses and I have never feed them, but I have heard of horses eating them and liking them. beet root is like beet pulp and has a lot of sugar in it so it can be used for weight building and for energy. turnips as well as rutabagas can be fed in replacement for carrots. they can be mixed in grain or used as treats.

i think i know wat survey ur talking about. according to it, they wont eat leeks i think it is (dont quote me on that). but that is all i know regarding that. idk if any of it is good for them but im thinking it may be bcuz why else would u feed ur horse turnips? lol. hope this helped a little! 鈾?

Yes and no, but they are not to be grouped together:

1. beet root, much like beet pulp, has a high sugar content and can have a weight building as well as energizing effect so should be used sparingly.

2. turnips are often fed in replacement of carrots esp in the UK and Ireland, mixed into mash/straight grain or given as treats. Similarly rutabagas are treated this way.

3. I don't know about leeks. I mean, its basically similar to scallions and that onion family which contain allium. Allium can cause anemia in horses if fed in large quantities but it has been said horses would graze on leek if given an opportunity. Try this article, it explains it better than I could
