Will rollers on my Sweet Iron Dee Ring Bit keep my horse from chomping the bit2007-11-24 21:23:24
There isn't much you can do to stop your horse from chomping on his bit. It shouldn't matter that much anyway.
Whatever you do, do not punish the horse by pulling the reins. A horses mouth should never be touched unless it is necessary.
Hope I have helped.
As a general rule adding copper rollers will increase the chewing. They will be playing with them. On the other hand sweet iron and the copper will keep mouth moist and softer. It is most likey an ingrained habit at this point. It might take some time to retrain it just depends on the horse and you. you might try switching bits, but if you are not showing and just pleasure riding, then try doing something diffrent to distract them horse. Usually bad habits like this develope for either improper fitting bits or boredom.
Ditto to most of the above. I have cherry rollers on a driving bit for my mule and yes its to encourage him to play and get his mind off leaving the arena every bloody second we are in lineup. It helps some, but its definately not to take the place over good training and making sure there are proper fitting and no pain issues.
Is your horse green to the bit? Sometimes giving more time or actually switching to a different metal might help.
Its a little pricier but I love german silver bits, my green animals never seem to dink with them and readily accept them.
Rollers encourage the horse playing with the bit. If you want him to stop chewing, but a flash on the bridle. It's an attachment on the noseband that wraps around under the bit on the horses chin and makes him keep his mouth closed, so he wont be able to chew on it. It sounds mean but almost all dressage horses have this, its ok.
Yes because the spend more time rolling the bit over their teeth because they love the sensation and it takes there concentration from "chopping".
no..you will actually acccomplish quite the opposite. Rollers are there to encourage play with the bit.
