Will soaking the hooves help get out the cement dirt
My new horse has hooves that are filled with this cement type dirt. They are packed solid, when i take a pick to them i can scratch on it and bits and pices come off but I cannot make a dent in the packed dirt/cement. Any ideas how I can get this stuff out of her hooves? What if i soak them in a bucket of warm water until it softens? Does anyone know what I can do?
Answers:Call your ferrier. It is likely that he or she would have run into this before.
i don't know. i would call a person who specializes in horse hooves. i would say take an entire day to try as hard as you can to get the stuff out b/c that can cause the horse to get an infection, and imagine how uncomfortable that is to her
yes that will help and if you soake them with water after you do try a hard bristle brush and schrub and it will soften the dirt
Hey there -
First of all, is this a natural dirt from her living quarters, or is it a synthetic substance a farrier has put in her hooves (previous owners should have notified you if that was so)? Also, sometimes horse hooves accumulate dead sole on the bottom that can appear like dirt. (If that's the case you're farrier can trim that off with a hoof knife the next time he/she visits)
Soaking her hooves should work just fine. In fact, a regular soak will be great for her! Keeping hooves hydrated with just plain water helps her grow a better quality hoof, keeps her feet flexible (and less prone to bruising), and helps her hoof slough off dead sole. Soaking will be a great treat for her feet!
call up your farrier he will get it out. but before you could go with water. I would only soak for a few minutes at a time then try picking them out, putting back after you get some dirt out. It should work pretty quickly. But if not, again call up a farrier.
yes soak them in warm water with bathing soap in it for about and hour or 2 it should get soft and fall off
Did your horse come with this problem, or is it something new? What is the dirt - just really hard packed mud or something else? Obviously knowing that will help you decide what to do.
