Winter Blanketing

Winter Blanketing2007-11-24 21:23:26

This is my first winter to have to buy a horse a winter blanket so I need some help. I live in Texas and the coldest it gets at night is probably like the low 30's. I do not want him growing a winter coat ( I know they naturally grow one, but I would like to keep it as short as possible ) so I need something heavy I guess. I'm not sure what to get, I figured 2 blankets, a lighter one and a heavier one. But I don't know about all these grams and fills and stuff! lol help me out.

Thanks,

Meaghan

We are in Central TN and have a climate much like yours. Rarely does is drop into the 20s at least not anymore.

Lights as mentioned above will help greatly. If you do not have the ability to do the entire barn like this, put a ceramic base heat lamp with a 250 watt clear infrared bulb in it on a timer for those hours. You want to give the horse the most light in his complete stall so put it up high enough where it will illuminate the entire stall.

Another option is on blanketing. Here is a chart explaining what blankets are needed at what temperature and which blanket type fits into those categories. http://www.equestrian-tack.com/temsheetc...

When selecting blankets and sheets always go with the highest outer level outer fabric as possible. They will tear the lower levels of blankets. Schneiders tack at www.sstack.com has some great blankets and sheets with guarantees. They also have their blankets divided up into lightweight, midweight, heavy, and extra heavy. The plus to their blankets is that they have the adjusta-fit system to where the blanket can be pulled up or let out in the shoulders which prevents blanket rubs. Using a turnout type sheet or blanket with the gussets in the front will also help to prevent rubs on the fronts of the legs and on the chest.
