Winter Blanketing

Using extra virgin olive oil at 2 to 4 oz a day will also help with hair coat length for some reason. I have seen this work on my own horses. You can buy it at Sams or Cosco in the gallon size for about $20.

Hope that helps and now is the best time to buy your blankets!

Keep your lights on until 10pm at night and then have them back on at 6am until daylight. This tricks the horse's pituitary into thinking it's summer and so the hair growth slows down and then just use a good quality medium weight quilted blanket and have a lighter one to go underneath when you get the really cold snaps. The lights will have a big impact on the coat staying nice and sleek. If you are confused, ask the sales person their opinion of what would work. It's better to get a medium weight one and a light one then just 1 heavy one because you have the option to change depending on the weather. I would also just use a slinky instead of a hood unless it's really cold and then use both. (hoods being looser tend to rub out the manes on their own). I used to live in N TX so I understand how the weather is down there and this what we did in our show barns.
Lisa M has it right.

However, I don't have access to lights (don't even have electricity where I board lol). So for those like me and show in the winter,

I do a comb cut and leave 1/2 in of fur on my mules. I blanket them in the fall with a heavy blanket. I definately prefer the 1260 denier. Nothing less or I'm wasting money.
