Winter Blanketing

You will have clipper marks when using a comb. If anyone has ideas how to not get clipper marks with a comb I am definately all ears.

Temperature has nothing to do with winter hair. Horses grow winter hair when the days get shorter and start to shed when the days get longer. The best thing to do is to keep lights on in your barn so your horses will think it is still summer. Also, if it is only down to 30 degrees at night, your horses don't need blanketing. Horses don't loose body heat until it is 14 degrees out. The only time I really blanket is if it is really windy, raining or terribly cold.
Well, i live far up north, but what we do to try not to get winter coats is start blanketing in the fall with a fall sheet, then when it gets colder use a winter sheet. Talk to your local tack store to help you pick the right one out for your horse.

If your horse does get a winter coat you can also ways clip him.

Horses survived in the wild without human-made winter coats. We dont blanket our horses and it gets below 10 degrees, sometimes below 0. Their natural coats will be fine, don't waste your money.
i've got a 400g heavy weight turnout for my TB in the winter, who lives out all the time, with a lightweight turnout (don't know the weight!) to go underneath fort the REALLY cold times. You can't really stop a horse growing their winter coats, although, if you want to keep it so that they don't get all sweaty when doing really hard work, then why not clip them?

make sure both the rugs are water proof, cos you could use the lightweight for the spring, and you dont' want your horse to get too wet!! (lol!)

for the lightweight, just ask at your local saddlery for a waterproof, lightweight turnout rug, and i'm sure they'll help you find the right one!

good luck!! and don't worry, i was in the same boat last year!! lol!! =D
