Winter coming soon
I was wondering about the barn. I have not been were it is cold in the winter. In southern Ca. it doesn't get that cold. I want to see if I am forgetting anything to do, or just didn't know about it. So I am just asking for tips. Thank you
Answers:are you talking Wy winters?? LOL
Its not so much the cold as it is the wind. My guys do fine in the -20 weather, its the wind that gets to them. They have run in sheds and stand on the outside of it, on the side blocked by the wind. Plus then feeding in the wind is soooooo much fun!
I feed in the shed to make sure they get their hay and also on the outside of the side blocked by wind. If I feed them out in the paddock, there is no hay left in minutes.
They can handle the cold, not a problem if your not clipping. Just give them alot of wind breaks.
You probably have electricity to your barn, but if you don't..
For watering, I use Tuff Flex 30gal tubs. I fill those up about 1/4 full at a time, use 2 tubs. Then the mules drink when I fill and it forms ice chucks that I can tip over and stomp out and refill to the 1/4 mark. Just another hint.
what are you wandering about?..
At the old barn I boarded at in wintertime(we get alot of cold and snow in my area) we blanketed the horses and made sure all the buckets were heated water buckets(for water only) and we still rode in the indoor arena. and the owner had radiator heaters in the tack room(never left them plugged when noone was around)
