Breeding with a person can be best if you are wanting to keep injuries to the horses to a minimum. Pasture breeding is a great thing, but unless the horses are all experienced, someone may get very injured. Young mares will kick the bejeezuz out of any stallion, aggressive stallions can literally rape a mare and damage her so she has trouble foaling later, among other things...so it is best when someone with experience is there to oversee things. We tend to put a novice stud out with a very complacent mare so he can learn the ropes without damage, which can put him off to breeding or injure him beyond redemption. In a breeding shed, the major danger goes to the persons involved as excited animals don't always know they are being injurious to their handlers. Experienced people know how to properly train/ handle the breeding animals so the whole process is safe for all involved. I think, though, the worst thing one can do is just turn a stallion into a field of mare[s] and hope for the best. The best may be huge vet bills and a lot of problems.

Anyway, I assume you mean live cover or Artificial Insemination? It really depends on the animals in question and the breed registry. For example, Thoroughbreds that are to be registered with the Jockey Club MUST be bred live cover or they cannot be registered, and thus, cannot race. Most other breeds allow either. Some mares take better live cover. Sometimes the mare and stallion are too far away, and AI is a more cost efficient option. So, it depends.

I think live cover is better for getting the mare to take. I have a stallion we only live cover and the results are better when we get the mares checked, but on the other hand I can't ship his semen to mare owners out of the area which isn't helpful. We live cover the mares by hand, never would I turn a stallion out for pasture breeding some people do and their stallions do wonderful at it and there aren't any injuries. I know I have a couple mares that need to be twitched or they will kick the heck out of the stallion and could hurt him bad!! So I don't like the pasture breeding for injury reasons. My other stallion only does the AI since he is overly aggresive with mares and it can be a pain, the mares get checked more often to see if the folicle is ready to bred it's more of a one chance breeding with the AI, the great benefit is I can ship his semen all over the world if need be. The costs invloved are higher with the vet bills and collection of the stallion. If it is an outside mare sometimes shipped semen can be cheaper for the mare owner since there isn't any mare care or farm fees. I think alot of it depends on timing with AI instead of live cover.
