Witch is better, beeding mare to stallion or with a person
Alot of it depends on preference, old timers will tell you there is no better way to breed than live cover but with all the technology we have learned now we have the opportunities to breed to stallions out of state, where years ago you would have to haul and sometimes that was just out of the questions.
Definately if you can do live cover, it will be cheaper and your chances of conception will be higher.
From years of experience, A.I. is harder to get the mare bred, and extremely costly. Plan on a minimum of $1500 in vet bills BEFORE you ever add on the booking fee, stud fee, collection and shipping fee.
Good luck with your decision.
Live cover is almost always the best option for breeding.
Having done both AI for QH ranches and live for TB's, embryo transfers and chilled semen, the costs are a lot less for the owner with AI and the risks to the mare such as cross infection, injuries etc are either reduced or absent when using AI. There is no proof that live cover makes a mare take better or quicker. That depends on correct palpation of the mare, quality of semen produced plus hormonal factors which can be manipulated and has nothing to do with how the semen gets in there.
If you have a TB which you wish to register, you have to use live cover, if you don't, then use AI. It's a lot safer for your mare. If mares were failing to take using AI or it was taking longer, QH farms would not be using it and then branching out into chilled semen. Because one collection can be used for multiple insemination doses, you can breed about 20 mares per day with one collection as opposed to only 3 per day using the maximum amount of live covers in a 24 hour period.
