With a pushy/bargey horse, will switching to a rope halter make that much of a difference
if that doesnt work
then you can put a stud chain on your regular halter
he will be much more responsive and listening to this
this should be a last resort tho
Get a 'stud chain' on the lead rope or attach one. Run the chain through the bottom metal piece/ring and under the chin and through the other metal piece. Now take the snap up to the upper metal ring on that same side.
This way, the chain can loosen up and give a snap back under the chin when Mr. Pushy acts up. The running of the chain through the chin and up to the higher metal ring will keep so much chain from hanging down that can hurt You.
Since the horse is NOT used to the chain, he needs to have some quick snap and release corrections - don't allow the chain to remain tight - - Mr. Pushy may go flying backwards to get away from the pain or rear !
SAFETY FIRST !
Don't let him get ahead of you when you lead. His head should be at your shoulder or a bit behind. I swing a short piece of the end of the lead back behind me as I walk so if a horse starts trying to get ahead, it is popped by the end of the lead.
You must be CONSISTENT in doing this.
If he is very pushy and that would work, I turn into the horse an give the back command. At the same time, I whip the chest enough to make him back up about 10 feet each time and make him get off of you. 1,000 lbs of horse can hurt! He will learn to get off of you.
