Wobbler syndrome

Wobbler syndrome2007-11-24 21:23:27

if i breed my mare who may have wobbler syndrome does that mean my foal will have it to.

Answers:

Breeding 2 wobblers together will not always result in the offspring being a wobbler so if the sire wasn't a wobbler, the chance would be less and this is a fact based upon extensive research. Your horse could also be suffering from EPM which can look a lot like a wobbler. Both EPM and wobblers can be helped by vitamin E supplements amongst other things and there are surgical options that can tremendously help wobblers. If it is EPM, you need to find out ASAP so appropriate drug therapy can be started before too much neurological damage is done.

Also, ignore the people that make the comments about not breeding wobblers. They obviously haven't understood that the mare was already in foal before you became aware of it. These things happen and you need to get a good vet on board and look at your options. If she is not too far along, you could have the foal pinched which would resolve that problem leaving you free to deal with the other.

Duh! 50/50
Um, yes. There's a large chance she will pass it to her foal. Why on earth would you breed a Wobbler mare and risk passing on the problem?
Sort of, just like if a person had syndrome, the baby would have miner birth effects, if you dont want your foal to have wobbler syndrome, then make sure the male horse is perfectly healthy. It's perfectly normal for it to be a syndrome-free horse with a parent that has syndrome!
