Wonder bit questions

Wonder bit questions2007-11-24 21:23:27

I want to know the real scoop on these wonder bits. I've heard lots of people say they are very extreme and other people say they just have a bad rap and they are not too extreme. I want to switch my 3 year old out of his wonder bit because I am concerned that it is too much, but so many people keep telling me its a good bit and not to switch. I want to use a VERY mild bit, but I need stopping power.my horse has energy. Does anyone have the facts on these wonder bits.are they too much for a 3 year old or are they really good bits? Below is a picture of the exact one that I bought.

Answers:

If you have the original wonder bit, with the regular mouth, not twisted or very thin. Think of it this way. the wonder bit, taking away the lower ring (shank) and the (purchase) the ring on the top where you connect your headstall you have what... an O-ring snaffle. Adding a purchase to an o ring an the shanks now is adding the leverage and the "pull" on the poll and the effects of a chin strap. Now, you can remove the leverage by moving your reins up onto the O and get the same effects as you would with a regular O ring.

Now, it is not a harsh bit, it a great bit to transition into the next level. If you show, you need to move your horse into the "allowed" bits for the age of the horse and some horses just naturally progress if doing some sort of sport and different controls need to be added.
