Working with a new horse

Working with a new horse2007-11-24 21:23:28

only push her to the point where she isn't comfortable and then back off. maybe if she gets upset when you mount up then let her walk around with on a lead line with the saddle on. then take the saddle off and brush her down and take your time. then try again the next time your see her.

it may all sound very silly but it's not. just try it i bet she will let you ride her in no time.

It takes time, I adopted a horse that had been abused by its owner and it took some months before it could trust me.

Just talk to her and pet her, dont rush things. You could just stand/sit in the pen and shel come check you out. But no worrys, I'm sure shel come around!! Good Luck!

You should be able to do ground work. There is no way that a horse will trust you on her back if they don't have any trust on the ground. If this horse is only getting out and worked when you work her (that is, 3-4 times per week) it's no wonder she was full of pent up energy. She might need to be lunged first to help reduce her energy level to a safe one, and it also offers you the opportunity to take control and create a disciplined, structured work schedule with her. Horses are creatures of habit, and structure can create confidence in many nervous horses. If you are not allowed ground work, I'd lease another horse. This kind of setup can lead to injury and then fear.
I worked with a horse like that, just persevere with it. She will trust you in the end.
