Working with a new horse
Working with a new horse2007-11-24 21:23:28
If the horses name is Lady in Petts Wood, give it up...That was the horse I loaned and the owner was horrible to me.
But just try to be more understanding about why she could be doing it. Some horses hate bright colors, other horses just don't like new people. Persevere and if her behavior doesn't change, tell the owner, if the horse still doesn't change with you, it isn't the horse for you.
Hope I helped!
Well of course she is nervous! I would be too if some new strange person started riding me! Try to understand how she is feeling, a new location, a new rider, new everything. She was also probably spooked by something. I think that it would be an excellent idea to do ground work with her, but not boring stuff like running around in circles, something fun! Like, rolling a bucket on the ground. Give her treats out of a bucket when she does something good. Groom her while talking to her so she gets used to your sound and touch. Hope this helps.
Make sure that all the tack you are using fits correctly, and that you are riding the horse a way she is used to. She may be acting up because you are doing something she is not used to, or you may be using the wrong bit or something. I've never seen a horse start acting up in the way you are describing simplily because of a new rider, usually there is an underlieing problem. Try takeing a few lessons from the owner, just to figure out all the horse's "buttons" and to make sure you aren't doing anything to scare or annoy the mare.
