Working with a new horse

Working with a new horse2007-11-24 21:23:28

Sounds like you need to define the terms of your lease a whole lot better !

I know how this can be. When riding a horse with familiar people around they can be totally comfy, but things change with them when they are alone with you. Think about it, they are being ridden by someone they don't know, they feel like you do too, awkward.

We never ride a horse on our property until they've been with us for a week, and we've spent alot of time with them, sometimes just being outside for them to see us. Brushing, being close to them, so they can adjust to us, and us to them too. It sounds like things are being rushed with this horse too much, she needs to get to know you, and ground work is the best way to do this. Round penning is the best thing in the world to get them to see you as the boss. Clinton Anderson and just about everyone else has dvd's out on how to do it, and normally a horse won't "charge" you or rear up at you, we do this with any new horse, it helps us get to know it, and visa versa. Ground work is extremely important, and you might not want to brush it off so quickly. If you rush too soon you may end up hurt. It didn't sound like your horse was too comfy with you. Go to SylviaScottNaturalHorsemanship and she has q/answers there it's excellent.

jeez person!! youve never done groundwork!!!! omg!! its a wonder your not dead by now!!! i volunteer at a rescue ranch where i ride any horse i could get, which is usually a new one every week! i always do ground work like backing through poles and turning on haunches and forehand and bending and most importantly LUNGING!!!! if you do lunging properly almost everyhorse can do it although most horses dont need a long lunging whip some do as an extension of your arm lunging gets the horse focused on you and you can see how the horse will probably behave in the saddle by lunging, ive never had a horse turn around and rear at me but then again i dont like those crazy long 40 ft. lunging flat nylon ropes where you hardly have any control at all except to make the horse careen aroung crazily i like the regular lead ropes, about 12 ft. or so put the horse in the direction you want to go then back up and MAKE SURE YOUR BEHIND HIS SHOULDER!!! i suppose if your not the horse could turn and face and start rearing but anyways!! first i would star with a well seasoned horse used to lunging as soon as you back up it wil probaby start off walking just strike a strong pose and stay behing the shoulder and stay in one point and turn with the horse when you want to trot raise your arm and start swinging it at its butt or you could tap his butt with the whip have him trot the just follow him, by turning, have him walk trot walk trot when it likes its lips or chews, it means hes accepting you as its boss and is listening to you when you want it to slow down just relax and lower your shoulders and just not have and as strong pose and croon ''whooooh" that should get him to start walking although he may turn and face you pet him then send him off again, its really easy all i do is walk and trot, especially if your a begginner!! i dont do to much cantering either cuz its harder to control them cuz they get all excited, lunging isn't just for getting the edge off you horse its listening to how he or she feels that day before you get on and get hurt like you did, if the horse is really nasty and bucking and stuff ther're just telling you the dont want to be ridden to day and i would leave them alone!! all horses can have a bad day so unless it continues to the point of being dangerouse i would work with the horse ON THE GROUND working up trust and a bond BEFORE you get in the saddle!!
