Working with a new horse2007-11-24 21:23:28

good luck and sorry if i bored you with this long answer theres just allot about lunging!

However good-tempered the horse may be, if she's green, she's going to have her silly moments. Just stay calm when they come up, and be firm with her. Let her know you're in charge.
If you have not worked with this horse previously, you and the horse have to get used to each other. I would suggest doing ground work with her, teaching her voice commands etc. If you have never done ground work, you need to get the help of someone who has. I don't consider it dangerous if you are in the round pen, have not distractions and have someone guide you. If you live near Ft. Worth, I would be glad to assist you.
Ok, I went to this parelli thing for horses and what you do is play games with a horse to get it to know you better! Ground work is always a must first! You have to do ground work and then let your horse get used to everything you put on her then get on her! Get her out of throwing her head and raring up! My best friend they got a new horse and the old owner said she wasnt ridable she got up on her and she rides just fine. She loves that horse only because she lerned its weeknesses and then fixed them! You have to become friends with your horse! Let the horse trust you! If your scared the horse will know and take advantage so be confident about getting on her then the horse wont really throw her head!
