Wormer for my horse

Wormer for my horse2007-11-24 21:23:28

I have several questions regarding worming my horse. He is a 14 yr old QH gelding. Here it goes:

1. I don't actually own him...I lease him. His owners worm him, but not often enough. Will he be alright if he gets wormed by both them and me in the same month?

2. He was last wormed with Strongid. What brand should I use next time?

3. If I start him on daily wormer, do I have to worm him less often?

Thanks :)

Answers:

You should, as all the others said, talk with the OWNERS of the horse. This is one of the draw backs of leasing...you don't own him an really don't have the right to those kinds of decisions unless you get their permission first.

You can over dose as others stated, causing colic.

You may not agree with their worming methods, but you have no choice but to abide by them.

I always wormed my horses approx. every three to four months, I would do it at every other shoeing so I could remember. I like Ivermectin and the other one, moxidectin- the one that gets bots in the last encysted stage. for late fall/early winter...

Lastly, I really don't like the daily dewormers, consider it like someone being cyanide poisoned, slowly...you ARE giving them a toxin, daily. Doesn't sit well with me. Just my opinion...

No, it WILL NOT be all right if he is dewormed twice in one month. You need to have a talk with his owners, as they are the one who should dispense ALL medicines to him, as they OWN him. You need to clear ANYTHING that you give to him with them FIRST.
