First, evaluate your time. Are you ready to dedicate to the long process of training a horse? As you already know it takes a lot of work and patience. If you are ready to dedicate yourself to training the horse, then I'd say get the younger green horse. You'll gain a lot of experience and have fun. If you aren't sure you can commit to train the younger horse, then get the older one that has been ridden. You can focus a lot more on moving forward with jumping or whatever discipline you do. Also, if you yourself have any problems (like position-wise or whatever), with the older horse you can also focus a bit more on yourself as a rider, not just on your horse.

I believe that you have the ability to bond with any horse, regardless of age. I have a 13 year old gelding that was broke to ride when he was 3 and then sold to someone who rode him for a year, then pastured him for seven years with only a once daily feeding of hay as his human interaction! I have had him for 2 years and he will do anything I ask him to and has a heart of pure gold. He is my bestest boy and I wouldn't trade him for anything. I also have another 13 year old gelding who is pretty much the same way, a litte friskier under saddle, and a 5 year old gelding that I have had for a year who I think was the most difficult to bond with and am currently training. I think you should not limit yourself to age and training, but look at a lot of different horses, both mares and geldings. Good luck!
Hi, I think it would be good to get a younger horse(one that had at least has been recognized to the saddle) sseing that you can break a horse, it shouldnt be a problem. The horse would probobly be more bonded with you as younger, too. Ummmm, about the gelding or mare--I don't think it matters...you just want one that is eager and willing to learn. Also for an old horse(specificlly for a thoroughbred) be sure to lift up their top lip and check under it to see if there is a branded number there--if so it was a race horse, not sure if that effects your descision. Hope that helped!
