Would You Buy A Horse That Wind Sucked/ Cribbed2007-11-24 21:23:30
ps-young or old-none of my other horses have picked up on this habit(remember they are not in stalls either though)
The equine love of my life was a cribber until the day she died. If I could find another like her, there'd be no hesitation--I'd do it again.
well it would depend on the horse i guess...but i would NOT have bought a horse form that woman i would have called animal control on her..all the horses there need help and by buying from her you may save one but your keeping her funded to buy 3 more to hurt..even if i had to have the horse i would have taken him home and then called on her..she needs to be stopped from hurting more horses..
No I would not buy a horse with either of these problems. I boarded a horse that was a wind sucker & kept a mare for a short while for breeding that was a cribber and both of these issues cause problems. They tear up all the fence posts, barn walls etc. Their teeth get worn down to the knub at an extremely early age so they have problems eating, they become hard keepers that you can't keep the weight on not to mention that sound when they are sucking in wind. I wouldn't have one around if you gave it to me!!
No sorry. I there is a reason horses that crib don't pass vet checks.
Wow this one is a toughie, I hate cribbers, and I understand why you'd never buy one, it is a learned habit and usually everyone else in the barn picks it up too. But the horse is young, and in bad shape, so it is possible to break him of it. I'd never buy a cribber either, but recently I adopted a Morgan mare who was abandoned at a house recently put on the market in out neighborhood and she cribs, but once she relaxed into her new home and actually was fed and turned out with others, her habit virtually stopped. So maybe if you care for him well and actually feed him, he'll stop. Oh and take photos of him thin, it may help you nab the woman who neglected him later.
NO. There are too many that are not and I personally, CANNOT STAND THE SOUND OF A HORSE WINDSUCKING. I'm not saying that they are unfit, if you can deal with it great, that horse needs an owner that loves him too!
