I have a 4 yr old thoroughbred that windsucks, the only way to stop it was to buy a $10.00 collar which works wonders, for the sake of the tiny amount of money it takes out all of the stress of having a windsucker. i dont understand why people wouldnt but a windsucker. it can be stopped so easily. he is a excellent showjumper and training now for dressage so he isnt useless...
No.
the short answer is that if the animal had loads of good points then yes.I have had many wind suckers/crib biters in my yard, won races with them and basicaly they did the job intended.the amateurs are put off but its fashion really, the vice wont stop an animal performing.
At 21 yrs, you've got other issues to worry about. I had one 15 yrs ago and I bought him a muzzle like a dog muzzle that attached to his halter and he could graze, eat grain, and drink just fine. I didnt keep it on him if he was going to be in the pasture more than a few hrs. because i worried about it getting caught up on something. He could just barely get a tooth through the side of the wire basket and onto his stall door. So, I put bars on the door too and no more sucking!
My sister and a former boarder own windsuckers. Both are otherwise nice horses, and are somewhat controlled by a cribbing collar they wear. It's not an ideal situation, but as long as it can be controlled and the horse is otherwise suitable, why not? Most horses (and people) have some issue to deal with.
if i fell in love with the horse then yes just because the have little vices like that does not mean that we should not give them a chance
Simply no, I would not but a windsucker/cribber. That drives me crazy!
The main concerns with a cribber are that other horses will pick up this habit and the expense of fence repair. There are cribbing straps that can be used, however I prefer not using them. The main good side of a cribber is that when they crib it releases a chemical in them that generally makes them a quieter horse to ride. I have never let the fact that a horse is a cribber be the deciding factor in my purchase.
the problem with a windsucker, is that it injests pure oxygen into its digestive tract, somehow it often gives them a high and can even lead to colic if the windsuck in dusty or sandy situations often detrimental or deadly.
