Are you graduating HS or College? either or you got a lot a head of you. I'd say don't tie yourself down to ANYTHING (that means animals, men, relationships, children,,, etc.!!)

Go explore. Come back enjoy Grandma's horse... Once you settle (think your age through 30+) then START to think what you want. your life is opening right now - go with it.

BTW - I'm 44 CF, widowed, rasied a few nieces & nephews. and mostly Been There Done That.

you get one shot... think this through.

P.S. at 44 I just got my first FULL time horses... 2!! Go girl, don't look back... I'm glad I didn't.. no regrets - in the end - we don't know when we might die... My first husband was 34... get the message?

it depends on the horse. even an older horse can and will get bored if it isn't stimulated and interacted with. most horses don't just want to stand around and chill all day everyday. there should be a goal for your horse. not just to have one but to have one to enjoy and for him to enjoy life too. weigh all your options. owning and caring for a horse daily gets old pretty quickly (definitely rewarding if you are totally up to it!) it is $$ and lots of time. maybe just having the opportunity to ride your grandmas is easier and much more convenient.

I'd say a 11-14 year old, because it wouldn't be as energetic, as you wouldn't NEED to ride it 7 days a week, and could ride it at the weekends. The younger horses need exercise to stop them being to enerjectic. This isn't always the case, as youger horses can be very laid back too, and older horses can be enerjectic, so when you are looking for a horse don't cross out any young ones and make sure you know what your older one is like before you buy it.
