Would video taping myself riding help2007-11-24 21:23:30

I have no pictures and no tapes of myself riding, except for about two months after I first started. A couple of the other girls at the barn have told me it can really help to see what you're doing wrong and correct yourself, especially with some of the posture problems I have.

Should I bother or not? It seems like a bit of a pain and if it wouldn't help I don't want to bother.

Answers:

Video taping yourself is one of the best tools you can use for improvement in your riding skills.

You can rewind your ride over and over catching little nuances someone watching you may miss. Going over rides with a trainer or friend is even better because she/he can help you pick out weak areas and help with advice on ways for improvement.

Re-taping over and over again.daily-weekly-or at shows, will allow you to see how the things you watch and then try to correct from the prior tapes are set into action.

I highly recommend you going to the trouble of asking someone to help you with video taping.

In barrel racing, it is done regularly for these purposes...

Good luck and hope this helps.

Wish we would have had videos when I started out, but believe me, I use them still, today.

Watching pros in your event is even helpful.I never miss an NFR :)

It's a good idea. Dancers work out in front of mirrors so that they can perfect their stance, postures etc and it might be useful to see yourself as others see you ride. You might feel that you are sitting correctly and then see a video and realize that the leg might be a bit far back, elbows need tucking in more etc. Some people just don't realize that they've picked up little bad habits. I think it would be useful just to try it one time. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Of course it will help, all good athletes and dancers and musicians and even public speakers should get themselves taped. It's a great way to see all the little mistakes that you don't even know you're making. It helps you visualize yourself doing it correctly, which is an important tool for building better habits. If you're serious about getting better, give it a try.
I have found that sometimes it is easier to just ask someone else what you could be improving on. Even if you can watch yourself riding it can be hard to see your mistakes. Find a buddy who can tell u what u could do better and then u can do that back to them. If you still feel like you need more suggestions than try videoing yourself. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
It's a great tool to see how you're doing. We tend to be our best and worst critics. You will improve a lot, it may be a bother, but well worth the end result. All the best;~)
Do it, it helps me a lot. That way you can see your improvement and little things that you can see yourself doing that the instructor missed. Also, you can make some cool videos with music and stuff.ha ha! I love to have myself video taped to see what I am doing wrong and also I love to see horses work and jump and stuff. When I walk out my horse I always watch the people around me.
It can be an awesome tool to help you understand how you're ridding is actually going. You can hear someone say "Get your shoulders back" a dozen times and be thinking "my shoulders can go back any further!" But then you look at a picture or video and can see that they are still too far forward. At shows it can be really helpful to have a video of your rides so you can pick out how to improve before your next ride.
I think its a great idea. my cousin has done it before. she improved alot of stuff for her and her horse. I havent done it yet but i plan to soon. Good Luck!!
yeah it helps so much. When my trainer would critique me I'd feel like i was making the correct change but i wasn't, when you see the video you can see exactly what you are doing wrong and you can give your self a better idea of how to correct it. I have found it to be one of the most helpful ways to improve your riding.(other then practice and a trainer of course )
it defenitally helps. You can see what you need to improve on. it has always helped my sisters riding!
Yes it will help. Do you like the other riders? What I would do is get together with them and see who can get a friends or parent or someone to video tape the lessons. Are they once a week? try video taping 1 a montht then each month have someone else do the taping. Even if you can only get a hold of 1 camera try to share. Then afterwards have a sleep over or just a get together and watch the video instead of critque it write everything down for ALL the riders on seperate sheets then give them to the riders and let them all read and watch themselves. Afterwards rent a good horse movie for fun like "The horse in the GRey Flannel Suit" and "Horsemasters" (both disney) It will be a fun night and educational as well you can also see how you improve if you do it once a month.
yeah definately. then you, or your trainer, can critique your riding when you're more focused on her ideas for improvement instead of 'oh my god i'm on a horse'. this way you'll learn more about yourself.
mmmm it might be helpful but i havent done it because i want to amke sure i don't confuse myself. i depend really on feeling what im doing it makes it easier for me not to try and match it up with a video. in my opinion its just one more thing to work out.
yeah, it would help, because u can see what u did wrong...
you should bother recording yourself- it can help you ssssssssoooooooooooooooooooooo...

much with seeing what you're doing wrong and then you can better correct yourself.

taping yourself is a very good way of fixing problems you are haveing since you can see exactly what you are doing and how it effects your horse if you are doing something wrong
yes you should alot of pros do that to figure out where they went wrong and/or what they can do better
