Would you breed a HYPP neg, positive or N/H horse2007-11-24 21:23:30

my thoughts exactly...why would anybody want to perpetuate a breed with a genetic defect??

Impressive horses are pretty..but..most are halter horses lead and feed great big huge body Lil tiny legs and feet that wont' hold up due to the body mass they carry along with the genetic defect!

"N/H x N/H have 25% chance of producing normal offspring, 50% chance of producing heterozygous carriers and 25% chance of producing homozygote offspring N/H x N/N have 50% chance of producing normal (NN) offspring and 50% chance of producing carriers (NH). " - UC Davis Study

I know of a stud who is Impressive lined and he is N/N. Most of the babies he has thrown out of N/H mares have luckily been N/N just out of pure luck. Personally I would rather be positive that I will have a good, healthy foal and just breed N/N horses. The AQHA is rumored to be changing the rules regarding this in the next several years - all N/H and H/H horses must not be used as breeding stock and cannot be registered.

I have seen an HYPP attack and it is not a fun experience for horse or owner. My advice to everyone is to be safe rather than sorry and just stick to breeding N/N AQHA stock.

Hi every one I personaly would never breed a HYYP positive horse. I have friends that have halter horses that are HYPP positive horses and they breed looking for the one to win the world It breaks my heart to know that even if they do get that horse it will proably be dead at 6 or 7 years old. There new stud was suposed be out of a N/N mare and an N/N stud but the the he is N/H. it broke my heart I love him so much he is such a good boy. He is so beautiful it saddens me to know that he will pass tis on to his offspring. But just to let every one know the AQHA has a plan to eliminate the HYPP positive horse from the halter ring. In the matter if three years in the year 2010 they will not be allowed to show these animals in the halter ring any more that will eliminaet the money and will stop the need to breed these horses and the practice will no longer be. It puts a smile on my face.
