Would you pass up a great horse because its a cribber2007-11-24 21:23:30

I really loved that horse but I have to admit if I had passed him up because of his cribbing I would have saved my mom a trip to the ER, and myself from a huge scar from being picked up by my shoulder by horse's teeth.

I don't think I can trust another cribber after this, even if it can be controlled by a collar. Plus there are all sorts of new studies that say the collars are really bad for the horses, and you have to control it other ways, it is just too much hassle, there are way too many nice horses for sale right now to bother with a cribber. Cribbing doesn't just ruin your fences and stalls, but is basicly like a drug addiction, it makes the horse act way out of character if they are able to do it.

Since you say his cribbing can be controlled by the halter, than I would consider his best qualities over that. That said, I agree with the person who has multiple horses, as I do. I would not want that habit instilled in my other horses.

I would make sure his bad habit really IS under control with the halter, prior to purchase though. Not only is it a destructive habit to your property, but it can also become extremely damaging to his health by ruining his teeth, causing obstructions in the intestines, and can lead to wind sucking, which is nearly incurable, and leads to premature death in most cases.

Just do your research and be aware of all the trouble it may cause beforehand. No matter how awesome the horse, a habit ,such as this, can cause an enormous amount of expense and misery, if uncontrollable. You don't want to set yourself up for failure, or a broken heart. Good luck in your decision.

No way! Cribbing isn't as bad as some vices. Including Rearing, Bucking, etc. You can just use a cribbing collar and it's fixed. Or one of these other great products..
