Many equine facilities do not take in horses that crib. It's destructive and can cause health problems later on down the road. Especially for mares, it can cause problems with their vulva from all the sucking. (infections are common and it may have to be sutured down the line) So, first you have to find a facility that will allow your horse b/c it spreads like an epidemic. Then you have to factor in the costs of repairs to wood. Finally, you need to consider the medical expenses down the line that are associated with wind sucking or cribbing.
Ultimately the decision is yours. Personally I would be willing to take in a cribber if I found pature board and a gelding.
I dont like cribbers. But I would not pass him/her up!
If his good points outweigh this one vice, then no, I would not pass him up. We had a rope horse that was super gentle, anyone could ride and rope on him, was great to trail ride on, and could win a halter class. And he was a cribber. And I know it when I bought him. And when I sold him for mega bucks, I disclosed the fact and it did not even make the buyer think twice, because this horse was great in so many other areas, this one thing did not bother him. There will be some people who will not even look at a cribber, but I think it is a matter of what a buyer considers to be major and minor flaws. And what they can and cannot live with.
Personally, I wouldn't pass on a good horse just because he's a cribber. I know it has health risks and can be picked up by other horses, but, it's not as serious as some other bad habits. More than likely he developed this bad habit because he was bored and left in a stall for long periods of time. If you turn him out all day with a few buddies, you should see a decrease in the cribbing. Some horses will even stop cribbing completely once they are allowed more turn out time. If you get him, try leaving him out all day and even all night if the weather permits. Get him a jolly ball or throw some plastic juice or milk jugs in his field. He will be happier and the cribbing won't be so much of an issue.
NOOOOOOOO if he is a great horse then why would you give him up for 1 little thing. espesily if it can be controlled!!
It wouldn't be the most ideal choice I'd want -- but if it was truly a good horse, then no. Cribbing is an ugly vice, and it can cause colic, and other horses around them can pick up the habit, but if he is easily controlled with a collar, then I don't think it is a reason to pass up on a truly good horse.
No, unless it is causing a health problem. That depends on how long it has been cribbing for, because cribbing and cause lung problems.
Absolutely not! A great horse is a great horse. Period.
No! just because they crib doesnt make them a bad horse. i have been riding a horse that cribs and he is close to perfect except for the whole biting when your saddling and and mounting thing though,
