If you have a friend to help you it would be more beneficial to learn your horse on the lunge starting with walk and ask your friend / partner to walk a few paces with your horse and then tell your friend to move out of the circle , when you have successfully established walk and stand / whoa continue the process with trot and later on canter . Remember to always ask the command and give praise repeatedly . I have taught all my youngsters this way . Good luck !
The more you can teach a young horse the easier things will be when you get on his back.
Mine could half pass in hand as a 2 year old. (now 8). I started doing things with him on the ground because I was getting impatient to get on him. I am so pleased I waited because he knew loads before I got on. Now he is a really fun chap. So long as you don't rush things and make sure he "gets it" before moving on to the next thing. Have fun. There is nothing like the bond we have with a horse partner when trust is built from early days.
Yes-any voice commands you can teach a young horse in hand will help when you start lunging/or join up if you want to train that way!The voice is a great helper when you start to ride too as other aids (leg eg) can be confusing butif they understand your voice commands it makes things much simpler,Hope this helps!!xx
