Advice on getting a tortoise2007-11-24 1:47:05

Best place to get one?

How much do they cost?

How hard is it to maintain them?

Any other advice would be great.

Thanks!

Answers:

in the UK you can get tortoises in a pet shop they are about 180 pounds for a year old one they do need lots of care and if you want one for the garden you have to be prepared to bring them in under a heat lamp when it is cold the best thing you can do is research tortoise on the Internet the tortoise trust has a good site to find out information and if you type in tortoise on your search there are some good sites for buying tortoises but make sure that if you get one you are prepared to care for it and if they get sick will require specialist treatment which can be expensive, so my advice is research them before you buy one and when you have all the information you need then decide if you really want to make a commitment of buying one, if it is your first tortoise then the horsfield tortoise is one of the easiest to care for and are more suited to the British climate,

the tortoise society called the Chelonian Society should give you all the info you need, or phone say, Whipsnade Zoo. We bought out baby tortoise there and they were very helpful.
