Although we tend to feed salads and fruit, being deserts dwellers, what is the natural food for tort
:)
The typical tortoise diet consists of grasses, wildflowers, cactus pads, and wild fruit. Occasionally a tortoise will eat bone material scavenged from mammal scat as a means of obtaining calcium. As with birds, stones may also function as gastroliths, enabling more efficient digestion of plant material in the stomach. Much of the tortoise鈥檚 water intake comes from moisture in the grasses and wildflowers they consume in the spring. A large urinary bladder can store over forty percent of the tortoise's body weight in water, urea, uric acid and nitrogenous wastes. During very dry times they may give off waste as a white paste rather than a watery urine. During periods of adequate rainfall, they drink copiously from any pools they find, and eliminate solid urates. Adult tortoises can survive a year or more without access to water.
Any plant material they can find as well as small insects.
your turtles diet should contain vegetables, fruit, and insects. they like tomatoes and mushrooms (((well my turtle))) but if you want to feed it food go to your pet store and ask them about they should have plenty of knowledge about it
The most natural food for Tortoises in England, is Dandelions & Clover you must make sure that they have not been treated with chemicals.
Do not give Iceberg lettuce (except as a treat) as this has no nutritional value if Dandelions or clover are not available, then any vegetable or salad particularly green ones will do in the short term.
the tortoise trust has a good site that will be able tell you what to feed your tortoise it depends on what sort of tortoise you have as to what you should feed it i have a Mediterranean tortoise and it is recommended that fruit should be limited, so the best thing is to find out what sort of tortoise you have and visit www.totoisetrust.org or type in tortoise trust on web search for the information you need.
We had 2 Tortioises for several years until we had to sell them due to sufficent space in the garden for them, ours eat dandillions, grass, wild flowers, fruit and veg, leaves and particually enjoyed warm/cold porridge! Not just the oats but actually made into porridge and they loved it.
For a change try some Hawthorn leaves still on the twigs, after all they eat this type of plant in their wild habitat
shrimps, small fishes, along with veggies and fruits will make a well balanced diet for turtles. But do not overfeed some certain types of foods to your turtles as this may mean insufficient intake of other foods
Tortoises in the wild eat vegetation. Grasses, Flowers, Plants. I don't know for a fact but have heard that they will eat certain roots too. Hope this helps...
From what I have learned recently weeds are the best for more info check out

It depends on the species of tortoise.
Leopard,Sulcata and Russian tortoise as well as many others eat a diet that is completely vegetarian; high fiber/low protien and consists completely of weeds, flowers and grasses/hay.
