Any advice on pet snakes2007-11-24 1:47:09

I'm thinking of getting a corn snake for a new pet (much to the dismay of my parents). Does anyone know where on Long Island I can purchase one? And where are some good places to by substrate, heating materials, and hides? And lastly, where is a good place to find feeder mice (preferably of the "mouse-popsicle" variety)?

Petco sucks.

They may be able to sell you a snake, but they will not be able to give you proper care info.

Find a breeder or reptile specialty shop.

you should never get a pet to "dismay" your parents. having a pet is a big responsibility they are not meant to be used as a tool to make other people mad. grow up

I agree with Sandy, Petco is a good place to get stuff like that. They even have packs of 3, from frozen pinky mice to full grown rats!

Cornsnakes are available everywhere. You could probably purchase and have shipped one from most breeders like myself for less than you'd pay at a Petco and get better advice on their care. While some Petco's actually have educated people working in the reptile section, I've found that most give wrong if not completely inaccurate info. Some are bad enough to kill your snake if you followed the advice. There are also a lot of mouse producers that will ship to you. Mouse Factory, Rodent pro, Big Apple herpetological all carry frozen mice to feed.

That said, you need to make sure that your parents support your decision to get a snake. If anything should happen with your new pet, for example, it gets out, they'll probably not be too happy. If your snake gets sick, are they willing to pay for a vet...a specialist I might add? Is there a reptile vet you can even get to? There are a lot of factors to keeping these animals that don't just involved getting one and that's it. You have to think long term.
