Hmm, well I have owned hermit crabs for four years, so I will tell you how mine is set up.

First, start with a large tank, preferably 10 gallon or larger.

Next, fill your tank with about 4 inches of soil so your crab can bury itself during molting.

Then, buy the next listed items and place them in your habitat:

1. Driftwood

2. Hermie hut

3. Extra shells

4. Food dish

5. Two water dishes, one for salt and one for fresh

6. A few aquarium plants.

7. Sand dollars or pieces or coral.

Also, in addition to sand, you can add hermit soil to your tank. Crabs love it and it is great for digging. Also put a sponge in your water dishes to increase humidity and prevent accidental drowning.

Lots of nice gravel on the bottom of the tank, a little "pool" of water display, a wet sponge always, little trees, light. yeahh =P
i have used 10 gallon fish tanks with sand in the bottom. also a jar lid makes a good water dish if you dig out a place in the sand for it, so the hermit crab can reach it. also a tasty snack for them is peanut butter, creamy style is best. usually the less obstacles the better for them, they tend to be clumsy.
They usually before sand over gravel or bark(because they like to tunnel)

Water dish with a little hermat crab sponge because they suck water out of them, and hide water in there shells
