How many crickets should my leopard geckos get2007-11-24 1:59:45

I have a mated pair of leopard geckos. Right now I feed them apx. a half dozen crickets each day. I've read a variety of info on the web and just wondered what others thought..

Leos feed primarely on live, moving insect prey. The diet may consist of crickets, mealworms, superworms, or/and silkworms. Prey items should be gut-loaded for at least 24 hours before feeding them out. Approriate-sized prey items should be offered every one to two days for juveniles, and two to three times a week for adults. Feed crickets with a body length no greater than the length of the gecko鈥檚 head and about half the width of the head. They will usually eat 4-6 food items.

For babies and juveniles, you should dust the food every day with a plain, no phosphorus calcium powder. For adults, dusting can be done every other feeding. Twice a week (for adults and babies), substitute with a calcium powder with D3 for dusting. Do NOT use the D3 powder for every dusting, as Leos can not absorb that much D3 and remain healthy.

They will be happy with a half dozen each day. Most geckos will stop eating when they are full and will not eat till they get sick as some animals will. However, they are also reluctant to eat dead crickets, so don't waste them either.

Geckos are not like bearded dragons and rarely over eat in my experience.

Half a dozen is a healthy sounding number, try throwing a few more in and seeing if they're interested in those as well. Since you mentioned breeding them - you will want to increase the females food and calcium a few months before breeding. [From 6 to 8 if she's interested in eating that much, for example.]
