Identify snake seen in northwestern Nicaragua2007-11-24 2:01:09

Wish I could add photo.

Snake is about 16 inches long, with slender head & body, smooth scales, and round pupils. Coloring is alternating black and off-white bands, with a red-orange stripe along the back which is interrupted by the black bands. The tip of the nose is black. Thought of a coral snake when I saw it, but it doesn't look like the pictures I've seen, since the red isn't in the form of bands, but rather like a dashed stripe along the length of the back. If anyone would benefit from seeing a picture, please reply with email address and I'll forward one.

The very bottom right-hand photo looks like your snake and is identified as an Amazon Tri-Colored Mud Snake. I couldn't find much reading about them, but there's a place to get you started.

If it's not a Coral Snake I wouldn't worry about it.
could be a california king
