Im thinking about getting a snake Which is better2007-11-24 2:00:41

A corn snake or a ball python. I've heard both are easy to take care of. I eventually want to breed them. Which kind should I get, and how do you tell whether they are male or female? Also how big do both types get? I don't want to get anything that gets too big.

Answers:

This is really the type of question that I love, someone who really want's to know something constructive. It's also awesome when a new snakekeeper is "born".

I've read through all the answers and there are some really great one's, the choice in the end comes down to what you prefer. I keep both species as well as Kingsnakes, Milksnakes, Brown House Snakes (South African species) and Burmese Pythons.

Ball Pythons

Pros:

Number of colour variations to choose from.

They are one of the smaller python species. Male 4ft Female 5-6ft

Easy to handle.

Not aggressive at all. (Still be carefull when handling food items)

Very lovely snakes.

Cons:

Very Expensive (Especially colour morphs)

Being pythons they are prone to a wider array of diseases.

Very fussy about temperature and humidity.

Some are difficult eaters, will stop eating for months at a time.

You'll need a larger enclosure when fully grown.

If they do bite it hurts and can bleed alot.

Nocturnal (Will sleep all day, come out at night)

Not all that easy to breed.

Corn Snakes

Pros:

Average size 3-5ft.
