I need facts on turtles and such. convincing facts. Thanks a million for your time! : D
Answers:Sounds like if you just print these responses up you'll get that turtle!
Mom knows best
If she is worried about salmonella, tell her not to eat the turtle.
Most turtles do not even HAVE salmonella. If you happen to get one that does, as long as you wash your hands after touching it, then you're fine.
Also, use the internet for more facts. Turtles are some of the safest pets, though.
go to that wakipedia site and print out the page on turtles. Tell her that salmonella from turtles is just as stupid as getting it from salmon. Just ain't gonna happen. Hope the info from the encyclopedia at that site helps you and you get to get a turtle.
If the turtle is under 4 inches, then it is almost guaranteed to have salmonella. Any bigger than that is OK, I would think.
If you do get a turtle larger than 4 inches (most pet stores won't sell smaller to you unless you're a teacher and using it for science) take it to the vet for a checkup, just to make sure.
Salmonella is NOT a scare in the US with common housepet turtles. It sounds to me like your mom just doesn't want a reptile in the house. I can't say I blame her, but salmonella just won't occur with a household turtle. These turtles are sold and bred in safe enviornments, and they are MEANT to be kept as pets, and domesticated accordingly. My brother has a Red Eared Slider turtle, his wife hates it.. but they really are fun pets. As long as you make sure the cage is cleaned about once a week, and the turtle is fed properly, there should be no worries. Tell your mom that they really are better pets than some.. they can live outside in a fenced garden all summer long, with some water of course, and can also be kept in rubbermaid tubs for a cheap tank. They are fun animals, and it would be a great experience for you to own one.
unfortunately i don't think u'll change her mind as they do carry salmonella unless u can make her believe that u will wash ur hands with soap and water every time u touch it. why don't u go on line and print up some facts to show her do a turtle.com or something like that. good luck
Wash your hands everytime after handling them. They are great pets to keep.
I know of a teacher who has one as a pet for her class, as long as you wash your hands with anti bacterial soap after every handling, as well as keep a clean tank you should be fine.
Turtles take a lot of work to care for them. With good care turtles can easily reach an age of 60 years and more. keep this in mind when buying a turtle. Some require a winter rest area, and some a summer rest area for their well being. Do you have a place in the backyard to make an enclosed area for it?The terrariums needed for turtles are quite heavy(about 550 lbs) and also costly. You'll need lighting for it also. Turtles need at least 8 hrs. of light.Turtles are wild animals and remain so even when bread in captivity. They are not suited to be cuddly pets. Please go to your library and get a book on keeping turtles. Learn all you can before you get one as a pet. You need to be able to care for it properly, as being keep as a pet, it can't care for its self.
just as what other people said above, turtles are safe, u just need to clean ur hands with soap before and after you handle them.
ive had my turtle for many years now. the salmonella thing isnt really a BIG deal.
